Melbourne<\/b> (\/\u02c8<\/span>m<\/span>\u025b<\/span>l<\/span>b<\/span>\u0259r<\/span>n<\/span>\/<\/a><\/span><\/span> locally\u00a0<\/small>[\u02c8m\u025b\u026bbn\u0329]<\/a><\/span>\u00a0(\"About<\/a>\u00a0listen<\/a><\/span><\/span>)<\/small>)[8]<\/a><\/sup>[9]<\/a><\/sup> is the state capital<\/a> and most populous city of the Australian state<\/a> of Victoria<\/a>, and the second-most populous city<\/a> in Australia<\/a> and Oceania<\/a>.[1]<\/a><\/sup> The name “Melbourne” covers an urban agglomeration<\/a> spanning 9,993\u00a0km2<\/sup> (3,858\u00a0sq\u00a0mi),[2]<\/a><\/sup> which comprises the broader metropolitan area<\/a>, as well as being the common name for its city centre<\/a>. The metropolis is located on the large natural bay of Port Phillip<\/a>and expands into the hinterlands towards the Dandenong<\/a> and Macedon<\/a> mountain ranges, Mornington Peninsula<\/a> and Yarra Valley<\/a>. Melbourne consists of 31 municipalities<\/a>.[10]<\/a><\/sup> It has a population of 4,725,316 as of 2016,[1]<\/a><\/sup> and its inhabitants are called Melburnians.[11]<\/a><\/sup>[12]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n

Founded by free settlers from the British<\/a> Crown colony<\/a> of Van Diemen’s Land<\/a> on 30 August 1835, in what was then the colony of New South Wales<\/a>,[13]<\/a><\/sup> it was incorporated as a Crown settlement in 1837.[13]<\/a><\/sup> It was named “Melbourne” by the Governor<\/a> of New South Wales, Sir Richard Bourke<\/a>, in honour of the British Prime Minister of the day, William Lamb, 2nd Viscount Melbourne<\/a>.[13]<\/a><\/sup> It was officially declared a city by Queen Victoria<\/a>, to whom Lord Melbourne was close, in 1847,[14]<\/a><\/sup> after which it became the capital of the newly founded colony of Victoria in 1851.[14]<\/a><\/sup> During the Victorian gold rush<\/a> of the 1850s, it was transformed into one of the world’s largest and wealthiest cities.[15]<\/a><\/sup> After the federation of Australia<\/a> in 1901, it served as the nation’s interim seat of government<\/a> until 1927.[16]<\/a><\/sup> Additionally, it was the host city of the 1956 Summer Olympics<\/a> and the 2006 Commonwealth Games<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Melbourne rates highly in education, entertainment, health care, research and development, tourism and sport,[17]<\/a><\/sup> making it the world’s most liveable city<\/a>\u2014for the seventh year in a row in 2017, according to the Economist Intelligence Unit<\/a>.[18]<\/a><\/sup> It is a leading financial centre<\/a> in the Asia-Pacific<\/a> region, and ranks among the top 15 cities in the world in the Global Financial Centres Index<\/a>.[19]<\/a><\/sup> Referred to as Australia’s “cultural capital”,[20]<\/a><\/sup> it is the birthplace of Australian impressionism<\/a>, Australian rules football<\/a>, the Australian film<\/a> and television industries<\/a>, and Australian contemporary dance<\/a>. It is recognised as a UNESCO<\/a> City of Literature<\/a> and a major centre for street art<\/a>, music<\/a> and theatre. It is home to many of Australia’s largest and oldest cultural institutions such as the Melbourne Cricket Ground<\/a>, the National Gallery of Victoria<\/a>, the State Library of Victoria<\/a> and the UNESCO World Heritage<\/a>-listed Royal Exhibition Building<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The main passenger airport serving the metropolis and the state is Melbourne Airport<\/a> (also called Tullamarine Airport), the second busiest in Australia. The Port of Melbourne<\/a> is Australia’s busiest seaport for containerised and general cargo.[21]<\/a><\/sup> Melbourne has an extensive transport network<\/a>. The main metropolitan train<\/a> terminus is Flinders Street Station<\/a>, and the main regional train<\/a> and coach terminus is Southern Cross Station<\/a>. Melbourne is also home to Australia’s most extensive freeway network and has the world’s largest urban tram network<\/a>.<\/p>\n
