In 2015, around 975,260 people lived within the city’s administrative limits. The Metropolitan City of Naples<\/a> had a population of 3,115,320. Naples is the 9th-most populous urban area<\/a>in the European Union<\/a> with a population of between 3 million[3]<\/a><\/sup> and 3.7 million.[4]<\/a><\/sup> About 4.4 million people live in the Naples metropolitan area<\/a>, the second in Italy after Milan and one of the largest metropolises on the Mediterranean Sea<\/a>.[2]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n

Naples is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities<\/a> in the world. Bronze Age<\/a> Greek settlements were established in the Naples area in the second millennium BC<\/a>.[5]<\/a><\/sup> A larger colony \u2013 initially known as Parthenope, \u03a0\u03b1\u03c1\u03b8\u03b5\u03bd\u03cc\u03c0\u03b7 \u2013 developed on the Island of Megaride<\/a> around the ninth century BC, at the end of the Greek Dark Ages<\/a>.[6]<\/a><\/sup>[7]<\/a><\/sup>[8]<\/a><\/sup> The city was refounded by Cumaeans<\/a> as Ne\u00e1polis in the sixth century BC[9]<\/a><\/sup> and became a linchpin of Magna Graecia<\/a>, playing a key role in the merging of Greek culture<\/a> into Roman society and eventually becoming a cultural centre of the Roman Republic<\/a>.[10]<\/a><\/sup> Naples remained influential after the fall of the Western Roman Empire<\/a>, serving as the capital of the Duchy of Naples<\/a> (661-1139) and of the Kingdom of Naples<\/a> between 1282 and 1816. Thereafter, in union with Sicily<\/a>, it became the capital of the Two Sicilies<\/a> until the unification of Italy<\/a> in 1861.<\/p>\n

Naples was the most-bombed<\/a> Italian city during World War II<\/a>.[11]<\/a><\/sup> Much of the city’s 20th-century periphery was constructed under Benito Mussolini<\/a>‘s fascist government, and during reconstruction efforts after World War II. In recent decades, Naples has constructed a large business district, the Centro Direzionale<\/a>, and has developed an advanced transport infrastructure, including an Alta Velocit\u00e0<\/a> high-speed rail link to Rome and Salerno<\/a>, and an expanded subway network<\/a>, which is planned to eventually cover half of the region. The city has experienced significant economic growth in recent decades, and unemployment levels in the city and surrounding Campania have decreased since 1999.[12]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n

Naples has the fourth-largest urban economy in Italy, after Milan, Rome and Turin<\/a>. It is the world’s 103rd-richest city by purchasing power<\/a>, with an estimated 2011 GDP of US$83.6 billion.[13]<\/a><\/sup>[14]<\/a><\/sup> The port of Naples<\/a> is one of the most important in Europe. Numerous major Italian companies, such as MSC Cruises<\/a> Italy S.p.A, are headquartered in Naples. The city also hosts NATO<\/a>‘s Allied Joint Force Command Naples<\/a>, the south antiterrorism observatory (North Africa<\/a>, Sahel<\/a> and Middle East<\/a>) of the Atlantic Alliance[15]<\/a><\/sup>, the Apple<\/a> Developer Academy[16]<\/a><\/sup> and the Lazarus Union<\/a> Italy[17]<\/a><\/sup>. The Villa Rosebery<\/a>, one of the three official residences of the President of Italy<\/a>, is located in the city’s Posillipo<\/a> district.<\/p>\n

Naples’ historic city centre is the largest in Europe,[18]<\/a><\/sup> covering 1,700 hectares (4,200 acres) and enclosing 27 centuries of history,[19]<\/a><\/sup> and is listed by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site<\/a>. Naples has long been a major cultural centre with a global sphere of influence, particularly during the Renaissance<\/a> and Enlightenment<\/a> eras.[20]<\/a><\/sup> In its geographical area are located numerous culturally and historically significant sites, including the Palace of Caserta<\/a>and the Roman ruins of Pompeii<\/a> and Herculaneum<\/a>. Naples is also known for its natural beauties (Posillipo, Phlegraean Fields<\/a>, Nisida<\/a>, Vesuvius<\/a>, etc.), comparables to those of Rio de Janeiro<\/a>[21]<\/a><\/sup>. Culinarily, Naples is synonymous with pizza<\/a>, which originated in the city. Neapolitan music<\/a> has furthermore been highly influential, credited with the invention of the romantic guitar<\/a> and the mandolin<\/a>, as well as notable contributions to opera and folk standards<\/a>. Popular characters and historical figures who have come to symbolise the city include Januarius<\/a>, the patron saint<\/a> of Naples, the comic figure Pulcinella<\/a>, and the Sirens<\/a> from the Greek epic poem<\/a> the Odyssey<\/a><\/i>. According to CNN<\/a>, the metro stop “Toledo” is the most beautiful in Europe and it won also the LEAF Award<\/a> ‘2013 as “Public building of the year”.[22]<\/a><\/sup>[23]<\/a><\/sup> Naples is the Italian city with the highest number of accredited stars from the Michelin Guide<\/a>.[24]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n

Naples’ sports scene is dominated by football<\/a> and Serie A<\/a> club S.S.C. Napoli<\/a>, two-time Italian champions and winner of European trophies, who play at the San Paolo Stadium<\/a> in the southwest of the city.<\/p>\n
