With 2,876,051 residents in 1,285\u00a0km<sup>2<\/sup> (496.1\u00a0sq\u00a0mi),<sup id=\"cite_ref-Istat_1-1\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Rome#cite_note-Istat-1\">[1]<\/a><\/sup> it is also the country&#8217;s most populated comune. It is the <a title=\"List of cities in the European Union by population within city limits\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/List_of_cities_in_the_European_Union_by_population_within_city_limits\">fourth-most populous city<\/a> in the European Union by population within city limits. It is the centre of the <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Metropolitan City of Rome\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Metropolitan_City_of_Rome\">Metropolitan City of Rome<\/a>, which has a population of 4.3 million residents.<sup id=\"cite_ref-PR_2-1\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Rome#cite_note-PR-2\">[2]<\/a><\/sup> Rome is located in the central-western portion of the <a title=\"Italian Peninsula\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Italian_Peninsula\">Italian Peninsula<\/a>, within Lazio (Latium), along the shores of the <a title=\"Tiber\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tiber\">Tiber<\/a>. The <a title=\"Vatican City\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Vatican_City\">Vatican City<\/a> is an independent country inside the city boundaries of Rome, the only existing example of a country within a city: for this reason Rome has been often defined as capital of two states.<sup id=\"cite_ref-3\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Rome#cite_note-3\">[3]<\/a><\/sup><sup id=\"cite_ref-4\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Rome#cite_note-4\">[4]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<p><a title=\"History of Rome\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/History_of_Rome\">Rome&#8217;s history<\/a> spans 28 centuries. While <a title=\"Roman mythology\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Roman_mythology\">Roman mythology<\/a> dates the <a title=\"Founding of Rome\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Founding_of_Rome\">founding of Rome<\/a> at around 753 BC, the site has been inhabited for much longer, making it one of the <a title=\"List of oldest continuously inhabited cities\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/List_of_oldest_continuously_inhabited_cities\">oldest continuously occupied sites<\/a> in Europe.<sup id=\"cite_ref-Heiken.2C_G._2005_5-0\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Rome#cite_note-Heiken.2C_G._2005-5\">[5]<\/a><\/sup> The city&#8217;s early population originated from a mix of <a title=\"Latins\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Latins\">Latins<\/a>, <a title=\"Etruscan civilization\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Etruscan_civilization\">Etruscans<\/a> and <a title=\"Sabines\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sabines\">Sabines<\/a>. Eventually, the city successively became the capital of the <a title=\"Roman Kingdom\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Roman_Kingdom\">Roman Kingdom<\/a>, the <a title=\"Roman Republic\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Roman_Republic\">Roman Republic<\/a> and the <a title=\"Roman Empire\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Roman_Empire\">Roman Empire<\/a>, and is regarded as the birthplace of <a title=\"Western culture\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Western_culture\">Western civilisation<\/a> and by some as the first ever <a title=\"Metropolis\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Metropolis\">metropolis<\/a>.<sup id=\"cite_ref-6\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Rome#cite_note-6\">[6]<\/a><\/sup> It was first called <i>The Eternal City<\/i> (<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Latin language\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Latin_language\">Latin<\/a>: <span lang=\"la\" xml:lang=\"la\"><i>Urbs Aeterna<\/i><\/span>; <a title=\"Italian language\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Italian_language\">Italian<\/a>: <span lang=\"it\" xml:lang=\"it\"><i>La Citt\u00e0 Eterna<\/i><\/span>) by the Roman poet <a title=\"Tibullus\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tibullus\">Tibullus<\/a> in the 1st century BC, and the expression was also taken up by <a title=\"Ovid\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ovid\">Ovid<\/a>, <a title=\"Virgil\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Virgil\">Virgil<\/a>, and <a title=\"Livy\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Livy\">Livy<\/a>.<sup id=\"cite_ref-7\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Rome#cite_note-7\">[7]<\/a><\/sup><sup id=\"cite_ref-8\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Rome#cite_note-8\">[8]<\/a><\/sup> Rome is also called the &#8220;<a title=\"Caput Mundi\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Caput_Mundi\">Caput Mundi<\/a>&#8221; (Capital of the World).<\/p>\n<p>After the <a title=\"Fall of the Western Roman Empire\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Fall_of_the_Western_Roman_Empire\">fall of the Western Empire<\/a>, which marked the beginning of the <a title=\"Middle Ages\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Middle_Ages\">Middle Ages<\/a>, Rome slowly fell under the political control of the <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Papacy\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Papacy\">Papacy<\/a>, which had settled in the city since the 1st century AD, until in the 8th century it became the capital of the <a title=\"Papal States\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Papal_States\">Papal States<\/a>, which lasted until 1870.<\/p>\n<p>Beginning with the <a title=\"Renaissance\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Renaissance\">Renaissance<\/a>, almost all the popes since <a title=\"Pope Nicholas V\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pope_Nicholas_V\">Nicholas V<\/a> (1447\u20131455) pursued over four hundred years a coherent architectural and urban programme aimed at making the city the artistic and cultural centre of the world.<sup id=\"cite_ref-9\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Rome#cite_note-9\">[9]<\/a><\/sup> In this way, Rome became first one of the major centres of the <a title=\"Italian Renaissance\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Italian_Renaissance\">Italian Renaissance<\/a>,<sup id=\"cite_ref-10\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Rome#cite_note-10\">[10]<\/a><\/sup> and then the birthplace of both the <a title=\"Baroque\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Baroque\">Baroque<\/a> style and <a title=\"Neoclassicism\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Neoclassicism\">Neoclassicism<\/a>. Famous artists, painters, sculptors and architects made Rome the centre of their activity, creating masterpieces throughout the city. In 1871 Rome became the capital of the <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Kingdom of Italy (1861\u20131946)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Kingdom_of_Italy_(1861%E2%80%931946)\">Kingdom of Italy<\/a>, which in 1946 became the <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Italian Republic\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Italian_Republic\">Italian Republic<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Rome has the status of a <a title=\"Global city\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Global_city\">global city<\/a>.<sup id=\"cite_ref-lboro.ac.uk_11-0\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Rome#cite_note-lboro.ac.uk-11\">[11]<\/a><\/sup><sup id=\"cite_ref-12\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Rome#cite_note-12\">[12]<\/a><\/sup><sup id=\"cite_ref-atkearney.at_13-0\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Rome#cite_note-atkearney.at-13\">[13]<\/a><\/sup> Rome ranked in 2016 as the 13th-most-visited city in the world, 3rd most visited in the <a title=\"European Union\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/European_Union\">European Union<\/a>, and the most popular tourist attraction in Italy.<sup id=\"cite_ref-14\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Rome#cite_note-14\">[14]<\/a><\/sup> Its historic centre is listed by <a title=\"UNESCO\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/UNESCO\">UNESCO<\/a> as a <a title=\"World Heritage Site\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/World_Heritage_Site\">World Heritage Site<\/a>.<sup id=\"cite_ref-whc.unesco.org_15-0\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Rome#cite_note-whc.unesco.org-15\">[15]<\/a><\/sup> Monuments and museums such as the <a title=\"Vatican Museums\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Vatican_Museums\">Vatican Museums<\/a> and the <a title=\"Colosseum\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Colosseum\">Colosseum<\/a> are among the world&#8217;s most visited tourist destinations with both locations receiving millions of tourists a year. Rome hosted the <a title=\"1960 Summer Olympics\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/1960_Summer_Olympics\">1960 Summer Olympics<\/a> and is the seat of United Nations&#8217; <a title=\"Food and Agriculture Organization\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Food_and_Agriculture_Organization\">Food and Agriculture Organization<\/a> (FAO). The city hosts the headquarters of many international business companies, such as <a title=\"Eni\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Eni\">Eni<\/a>, <a title=\"Enel\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Enel\">Enel<\/a>, <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"TIM (brand)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/TIM_(brand)\">TIM<\/a>and national and international banks such as Unicredit and <a title=\"Banca Nazionale del Lavoro\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Banca_Nazionale_del_Lavoro\">BNL<\/a>. Its business district, called EUR, is the base of many companies involved in the oil industry, the pharmaceutical industry and financial services.
