Mexico City<\/b>, or the City of Mexico<\/b> (Spanish: Ciudad de M\u00e9xico<\/i><\/span>, American Spanish:\u00a0<\/small>[sju\u02c8\u00f0a(\u00f0) \u00f0e \u02c8me\u00e7iko]<\/a><\/span>\u00a0(\"About<\/a>\u00a0listen<\/a><\/span><\/span>)<\/small>;[13]<\/a><\/sup> abbreviated as CDMX<\/b>), is the capital and most populous city of Mexico<\/a>.[14]<\/a><\/sup> Mexico City is one of the most important financial centers in the Americas<\/a>.[15]<\/a><\/sup> It is located in the Valley of Mexico<\/a> (Valle de M\u00e9xico<\/i>), a large valley in the high plateaus<\/a> at the center of Mexico<\/a>, at an altitude of 2,240 metres (7,350\u00a0ft). The city consists of sixteen municipalities<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The 2009 estimated population for the city proper was approximately 8.84 million people,[16]<\/a><\/sup> with a land area of 1,485 square kilometres (573\u00a0sq\u00a0mi).[17]<\/a><\/sup> According to the most recent definition agreed upon by the federal and state governments, the Greater Mexico City<\/a> population is 21.3\u00a0million people, making it the largest metropolitan area<\/a> of the Western Hemisphere<\/a>, the tenth-largest agglomeration<\/a>, and the largest Spanish-speaking<\/a> city in the world.[18]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n

Greater Mexico City<\/a> has a GDP<\/a> of $411 billion in 2011, making Mexico City urban agglomeration<\/a> one of the largest metropolitan areas in the world<\/a>.[19]<\/a><\/sup> The city was responsible for generating 15.8% of Mexico’s GDP and the metropolitan area accounted for about 22% of total national GDP.[20]<\/a><\/sup> As a stand-alone country, in 2013, Mexico City would be the fifth-largest economy in Latin America<\/a>\u2014five times as large as Costa Rica<\/a> and about the same size as Peru<\/a>.[21]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n

Mexico\u2019s capital is both the oldest capital city in the Americas<\/a> and one of two founded by Native Americans, the other being Quito<\/a>, Ecuador. The city was originally built on an island of Lake Texcoco<\/a> by the Aztecs<\/a> in 1325 as Tenochtitlan<\/a>, which was almost completely destroyed in the 1521 siege of Tenochtitlan<\/a>, and subsequently redesigned and rebuilt in accordance with the Spanish urban standards<\/a>. In 1524, the municipality<\/a> of Mexico City was established, known as M\u00e9xico Tenochtitl\u00e1n<\/i>,[22]<\/a><\/sup> and as of 1585 it was officially known as Ciudad de M\u00e9xico<\/i> (Mexico City).[22]<\/a><\/sup> Mexico City served as the political, administrative and financial center of a major part of the Spanish colonial empire<\/a>.[23]<\/a><\/sup> After independence from Spain<\/a> was achieved, the federal district<\/a> was created in 1824.<\/p>\n

After years of demanding greater political autonomy<\/a>, residents were given the right to directly elect a Head of Government<\/a> and the representatives of the unicameral<\/a> Legislative Assembly<\/a> by popular vote<\/a> in 1997. Ever since, the left-wing Party of the Democratic Revolution<\/a> (PRD) has controlled both of them.[24]<\/a><\/sup> In recent years, the local government has passed a wave of liberal policies, such as abortion<\/a> on request, a limited form of euthanasia<\/a>, no-fault divorce<\/a>, and same-sex marriage<\/a>. On January 29, 2016, it ceased to be called the Federal District<\/i> (Spanish: Distrito Federal<\/i> or D.F.).[25]<\/a><\/sup> The former “Distrito Federal” is now officially known as “Ciudad de M\u00e9xico” (or “CDMX”).[25]<\/a><\/sup> Mexico City is now in transition to become the country’s 32nd federal entity, giving it a level of autonomy comparable to that of a state.[25]<\/a><\/sup> Because of a clause in the Mexican Constitution<\/a>, however, as the seat of the powers of the federation, it can never become a state, unless the capital of the country is relocated elsewhere.[26]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n
