The city consists of sixteen <a title=\"Municipalities of Mexico City\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Municipalities_of_Mexico_City\">municipalities<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The 2009 estimated population for the city proper was approximately 8.84 million people,<sup id=\"cite_ref-ZMVM_2009_16-0\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mexico_City#cite_note-ZMVM_2009-16\">[16]<\/a><\/sup> with a land area of 1,485 square kilometres (573\u00a0sq\u00a0mi).<sup id=\"cite_ref-17\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mexico_City#cite_note-17\">[17]<\/a><\/sup> According to the most recent definition agreed upon by the federal and state governments, the <a title=\"Greater Mexico City\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Greater_Mexico_City\">Greater Mexico City<\/a> population is 21.3\u00a0million people, making it the <a title=\"List of metropolitan areas by population\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/List_of_metropolitan_areas_by_population\">largest metropolitan area<\/a> of the <a title=\"Western Hemisphere\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Western_Hemisphere\">Western Hemisphere<\/a>, the <a title=\"List of agglomerations by population\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/List_of_agglomerations_by_population\">tenth-largest agglomeration<\/a>, and the largest <a title=\"Spanish language\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Spanish_language\">Spanish-speaking<\/a> city in the world.<sup id=\"cite_ref-UN2007PopulationDatabase_18-0\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mexico_City#cite_note-UN2007PopulationDatabase-18\">[18]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Greater Mexico City\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Greater_Mexico_City\">Greater Mexico City<\/a> has a <a title=\"Gross domestic product\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Gross_domestic_product\">GDP<\/a> of $411 billion in 2011, making <a title=\"Greater Mexico City\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Greater_Mexico_City\">Mexico City urban agglomeration<\/a> one of the <a title=\"List of cities by GDP\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/List_of_cities_by_GDP\">largest metropolitan areas in the world<\/a>.<sup id=\"cite_ref-19\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mexico_City#cite_note-19\">[19]<\/a><\/sup> The city was responsible for generating 15.8% of Mexico&#8217;s GDP and the metropolitan area accounted for about 22% of total national GDP.<sup id=\"cite_ref-GDP_20-0\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mexico_City#cite_note-GDP-20\">[20]<\/a><\/sup> As a stand-alone country, in 2013, Mexico City would be the fifth-largest economy in <a title=\"Latin America\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Latin_America\">Latin America<\/a>\u2014five times as large as <a title=\"Costa Rica\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Costa_Rica\">Costa Rica<\/a> and about the same size as <a title=\"Peru\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Peru\">Peru<\/a>.<sup id=\"cite_ref-21\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mexico_City#cite_note-21\">[21]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<p>Mexico\u2019s capital is both the <a title=\"List of oldest continuously inhabited cities\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/List_of_oldest_continuously_inhabited_cities#America.2C_Middle\">oldest capital city in the Americas<\/a> and one of two founded by Native Americans, the other being <a title=\"Quito\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Quito\">Quito<\/a>, Ecuador. The city was originally built on an island of <a title=\"Lake Texcoco\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Lake_Texcoco\">Lake Texcoco<\/a> by the <a title=\"Aztec\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Aztec\">Aztecs<\/a> in 1325 as <a title=\"Tenochtitlan\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tenochtitlan\">Tenochtitlan<\/a>, which was almost completely destroyed in the 1521 <a title=\"Fall of Tenochtitlan\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Fall_of_Tenochtitlan\">siege of Tenochtitlan<\/a>, and subsequently redesigned and rebuilt in accordance with the <a title=\"Spanish architecture\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Spanish_architecture#Spanish_Colonial_architecture\">Spanish urban standards<\/a>. In 1524, the <a title=\"Municipalities of Mexico\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Municipalities_of_Mexico\">municipality<\/a> of Mexico City was established, known as <i>M\u00e9xico Tenochtitl\u00e1n<\/i>,<sup id=\"cite_ref-gobdf_22-0\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mexico_City#cite_note-gobdf-22\">[22]<\/a><\/sup> and as of 1585 it was officially known as <i>Ciudad de M\u00e9xico<\/i> (Mexico City).<sup id=\"cite_ref-gobdf_22-1\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mexico_City#cite_note-gobdf-22\">[22]<\/a><\/sup> Mexico City served as the political, administrative and financial center of a major part of the <a title=\"Spanish Empire\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Spanish_Empire\">Spanish colonial empire<\/a>.<sup id=\"cite_ref-UN_23-0\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mexico_City#cite_note-UN-23\">[23]<\/a><\/sup> After <a title=\"Mexican War of Independence\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mexican_War_of_Independence\">independence from Spain<\/a> was achieved, the <a title=\"Federal district\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Federal_district\">federal district<\/a> was created in 1824.<\/p>\n<p>After years of demanding greater political <a title=\"Autonomy\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Autonomy\">autonomy<\/a>, residents were given the right to directly elect a <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Head of Government of the Federal District\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Head_of_Government_of_the_Federal_District\">Head of Government<\/a> and the representatives of the <a title=\"Unicameralism\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Unicameralism\">unicameral<\/a> <a title=\"Legislative Assembly of the Federal District\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Legislative_Assembly_of_the_Federal_District\">Legislative Assembly<\/a> by <a title=\"Election\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Election\">popular vote<\/a> in 1997. Ever since, the left-wing <a title=\"Party of the Democratic Revolution\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Party_of_the_Democratic_Revolution\">Party of the Democratic Revolution<\/a> (PRD) has controlled both of them.<sup id=\"cite_ref-24\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mexico_City#cite_note-24\">[24]<\/a><\/sup> In recent years, the local government has passed a wave of liberal policies, such as <a title=\"Abortion in Mexico\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Abortion_in_Mexico\">abortion<\/a> on request, a limited form of <a title=\"Euthanasia in Mexico\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Euthanasia_in_Mexico\">euthanasia<\/a>, <a title=\"No-fault divorce\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/No-fault_divorce\">no-fault divorce<\/a>, and <a title=\"Same-sex marriage in Mexico City\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Same-sex_marriage_in_Mexico_City\">same-sex marriage<\/a>.
