It is located in the <a title=\"Aburr\u00e1 Valley\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Aburr%C3%A1_Valley\">Aburr\u00e1 Valley<\/a>, a central region of the <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Andes Mountains\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Andes_Mountains\">Andes Mountains<\/a> in South America. According to the <a title=\"National Administrative Department of Statistics (Colombia)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/National_Administrative_Department_of_Statistics_(Colombia)\">National Administrative Department of Statistics<\/a>, the city has an estimated population of 2.5 million as of 2017.<sup id=\"cite_ref-NADS_1-2\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Medell%C3%ADn#cite_note-NADS-1\">[1]<\/a><\/sup> With its surrounding area that includes nine other cities, the <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Metropolitan Area of Medell\u00edn\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Metropolitan_Area_of_Medell%C3%ADn\">metropolitan area of Medell\u00edn<\/a> is the second-largest urban agglomeration in Colombia in terms of population and economy, with more than 3.7 million people.<\/p>\n<p>In 1616 the Spaniard Francisco Herrera Campuzano erected a small indigenous village (&#8220;<i>poblado<\/i>&#8220;) known as &#8220;<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Lawrence of Rome\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Lawrence_of_Rome\">Saint Lawrence<\/a> of Aburr\u00e1&#8221; (<i>San Lorenzo de Aburr\u00e1<\/i>), located in the present-day <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"El Poblado (Medell\u00edn)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/El_Poblado_(Medell%C3%ADn)\">El Poblado<\/a> commune. On 2 November 1675, the <a title=\"Queen consort\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Queen_consort\">queen consort<\/a> <a title=\"Mariana of Austria\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mariana_of_Austria\">Mariana of Austria<\/a> founded the &#8220;Town of <a title=\"Virgin of Candelaria\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Virgin_of_Candelaria\">Our Lady of Candelaria<\/a> of Medell\u00edn&#8221; (<i>Villa de Nuestra Se\u00f1ora de la Candelaria de Medell\u00edn<\/i>) in the An\u00e1 region, which today corresponds to the center of the city (east-central zone) and first describes the region as &#8220;Medell\u00edn&#8221;. In 1826, the city was named the capital of the <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Department of Antioquia\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Department_of_Antioquia\">Department of Antioquia<\/a> by the National Congress of the nascent <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Republic of Gran Colombia\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Republic_of_Gran_Colombia\">Republic of Gran Colombia<\/a>, comprised by present-day Colombia, Venezuela, Ecuador and Panama. After Colombia won its independence from Spain, Medell\u00edn became the capital of the Federal State of Antioquia until 1888, with the proclamation of the <a title=\"Colombian Constitution of 1886\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Colombian_Constitution_of_1886\">Colombian Constitution of 1886<\/a>. During the 19th century, Medell\u00edn was a dynamic commercial center, first exporting gold, then producing and exporting coffee.<\/p>\n<p>At the beginning of the 21st century the city regained industrial dynamism, with the construction of the <a title=\"Medell\u00edn Metro\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Medell%C3%ADn_Metro\">Medell\u00edn Metro<\/a> commuter rail, liberalized development policies, improved security and improved education. Researchers at the <a title=\"Overseas Development Institute\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Overseas_Development_Institute\">Overseas Development Institute<\/a> have lauded the city as a pioneer of a post-<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Washington consensus\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Washington_consensus\">Washington consensus<\/a> &#8220;<a title=\"Developmental state\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Developmental_state#Local_Developmental_State\">local development state<\/a>&#8221; model of economic development.<sup id=\"cite_ref-ODI1_3-0\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Medell%C3%ADn#cite_note-ODI1-3\">[3]<\/a><\/sup> The city is promoted internationally as a <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Tourist destination\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tourist_destination\">tourist destination<\/a> and is considered a <a title=\"Global city\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Global_city\">global city<\/a> type &#8220;Gamma -&#8221; by <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"GaWC\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/GaWC\">GaWC<\/a>.<sup id=\"cite_ref-4\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Medell%C3%ADn#cite_note-4\">[4]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<p>The Medell\u00edn Metropolitan Area produces 67% of the <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Department of Antioquia\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Department_of_Antioquia\">Department of Antioquia<\/a>&#8216;s GDP and 11% of the <a title=\"Economy of Colombia\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Economy_of_Colombia\">economy of Colombia<\/a>.<sup id=\"cite_ref-ProExport16_5-0\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Medell%C3%ADn#cite_note-ProExport16-5\">[5]<\/a><\/sup> Medell\u00edn is important to the region for its universities, academies, commerce, industry, science, health services, flower-growing and festivals.<\/p>\n<p>In February 2013, the <a title=\"Urban Land Institute\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Urban_Land_Institute\">Urban Land Institute<\/a> chose Medell\u00edn as the most innovative city in the world due to its recent advances in politics, education and social development.<sup id=\"cite_ref-6\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Medell%C3%ADn#cite_note-6\">[6]<\/a><\/sup> In the same year, Medell\u00edn was announced as the preferred corporate business destination in South America, and won the Ver\u00f3nica Rudge Urbanism Award conferred by Harvard University to the Urban Development Enterprise, mainly due to the North-Western Integral Development Project in the city.<sup id=\"cite_ref-7\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Medell%C3%ADn#cite_note-7\">[7]<\/a><\/sup> In September 2013, the United Nations ratified Colombia&#8217;s petition to host UN-Habitat&#8217;s 7th <a title=\"World Urban Forum\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/World_Urban_Forum\">World Urban Forum<\/a><sup id=\"cite_ref-8\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Medell%C3%ADn#cite_note-8\">[8]<\/a><\/sup> in Medell\u00edn, from April 5\u201311, 2014.<sup id=\"cite_ref-9\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Medell%C3%ADn#cite_note-9\">[9]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<p>The most recent survey on the global status of the Smart Cities by <a title=\"Indra Sistemas\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Indra_Sistemas\">Indra Sistemas<\/a> catalogs Medell\u00edn as one of the best cities to live in South America, sharing first place with <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Santiago de Chile\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Santiago_de_Chile\">Santiago de Chile<\/a>, and alongside <a title=\"Barcelona\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Barcelona\">Barcelona<\/a>and <a title=\"Lisbon\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Lisbon\">Lisbon<\/a> in Europe.<sup id=\"cite_ref-Diario_ADN_10-0\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Medell%C3%ADn#cite_note-Diario_ADN-10\">[10]<\/a><\/sup> Medell\u00edn won the Lee Kuan Yew World City Prize 2016.
