With over 2.7\u00a0million residents, it is also the most populous city in both the state<\/a> of Illinois<\/a> and the Midwestern United States<\/a>. It is the county seat<\/a> of Cook County<\/a>. The Chicago metropolitan area<\/a>, often referred to as Chicagoland, has nearly 10 million people and is the third-largest in the U.S. Chicago has often been called a global architecture capital.[6]<\/a><\/sup>[7]<\/a><\/sup> Chicago is considered one of the most important business centers in the world.[8]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n

Chicago was incorporated as a city in 1837, near a portage<\/a> between the Great Lakes<\/a> and the Mississippi River watershed<\/a>, and grew rapidly in the mid-nineteenth century.[9]<\/a><\/sup> After the Great Chicago Fire<\/a> of 1871, which razed several square miles and left more than 100,000 homeless, the city made a concerted effort to rebuild on the damage.[10]<\/a><\/sup> The construction boom accelerated population growth throughout the following decades, leading Chicago to become among the five largest cities in the world by 1900.[11]<\/a><\/sup> During this period Chicago made noted contributions to urban planning and zoning standards, new construction styles (including the Chicago School<\/a> of architecture), the development of the City Beautiful Movement<\/a>, and the eventual creation of the steel-framed skyscraper<\/a>.[12]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n

Positioned along Lake Michigan<\/a>, the city is an international hub for finance, commerce, industry, technology, telecommunications, and transportation: O’Hare International Airport<\/a> is the second-busiest airport in the world when measured by aircraft traffic<\/a>; the region also has the largest number of U.S. highways and rail road freight.[13]<\/a><\/sup> In 2012, Chicago was listed as an alpha global city by the Globalization and World Cities Research Network<\/a>,[14]<\/a><\/sup> and ranked seventh in the world in the 2016 Global Cities Index<\/a>.[15]<\/a><\/sup> Chicago has the third-largest gross metropolitan product<\/a> in the United States\u2014about $640 billion according to 2015 estimates.[16]<\/a><\/sup> The city has one of the world’s largest and most diversified economies with no single industry employing more than 14% of the workforce.[17]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n

In 2016, Chicago hosted a record 54 million domestic and international visitors, making it one of the most visited cities in the United States<\/a>.[18]<\/a><\/sup>[19]<\/a><\/sup> Landmarks in the city include Millennium Park<\/a>, Navy Pier<\/a>, the Magnificent Mile<\/a>, Art Institute of Chicago<\/a>, Museum Campus<\/a>, the Willis (Sears) Tower<\/a>, Museum of Science and Industry<\/a>, and Lincoln Park Zoo<\/a>. Chicago’s culture<\/a> includes the visual arts, novels, film, theater (especially improvisational comedy<\/a>), and music, particularly jazz<\/a>, blues<\/a>, soul<\/a>, hip-hop<\/a>, gospel<\/a>,[20]<\/a><\/sup> and house music<\/a>. There are many colleges and universities in the Chicago area; of which Northwestern University<\/a>, the University of Chicago<\/a>, and the University of Illinois at Chicago<\/a> are classified<\/a> as “highest research” doctoral universities.<\/p>\n

Chicago has professional sports teams in each of the major professional leagues<\/a>. The city has many nicknames, the best-known being the Windy City<\/a> and Chi-Town.[21]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n
