Madrid<\/b> (\/m<\/span>\u0259<\/span>\u02c8<\/span>d<\/span>r<\/span>\u026a<\/span>d<\/span>\/<\/a><\/span><\/span>, Spanish:\u00a0<\/small>[ma\u02c8\u00f0\u027ei\u00f0]<\/a><\/span>, locally\u00a0<\/small>[ma\u02c8\u00f0\u027ei(\u03b8)]<\/a><\/span>) is the capital of Spain<\/a> and the largest municipality<\/a> in both the Community of Madrid<\/a> and Spain as a whole. The city has almost 3.166\u00a0million[4]<\/a><\/sup> inhabitants with a metropolitan area<\/a> population of approximately 6.5 million. It is the third-largest city<\/a> in the European Union<\/a> (EU) after London<\/a> and Berlin<\/a>, and its metropolitan area<\/a> is the third-largest<\/a> in the EU after those of London<\/a> and Paris<\/a>.[5]<\/a><\/sup>[6]<\/a><\/sup>[7]<\/a><\/sup>[8]<\/a><\/sup> The municipality itself covers an area of 604.3\u00a0km2<\/sup> (233.3\u00a0sq\u00a0mi).[9]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n

Madrid lies on the River Manzanares<\/a> in the centre of both the country<\/a> and the Community of Madrid<\/a> (which comprises the city of Madrid, its conurbation and extended suburbs and villages); this community is bordered by the autonomous communities<\/a> of Castile and Le\u00f3n<\/a> and Castile-La Mancha<\/a>. As the capital city of Spain, seat of government<\/a>, and residence<\/a> of the Spanish monarch<\/a>, Madrid is also the political, economic and cultural centre of the country.[10]<\/a><\/sup> The current mayor is Manuela Carmena<\/a> from the party Ahora Madrid<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The Madrid urban agglomeration has the third-largest GDP<\/a>[11]<\/a><\/sup> in the European Union<\/a> and its influences in politics<\/a>, education<\/a>, entertainment<\/a>, environment<\/a>, media<\/a>, fashion<\/a>, science<\/a>, culture<\/a>, and the arts<\/a> all contribute to its status as one of the world’s major global cities<\/a>.[12]<\/a><\/sup>[13]<\/a><\/sup> Madrid is home to two world-famous football<\/a> clubs, Real Madrid<\/a> and Atl\u00e9tico de Madrid<\/a>. Due to its economic output<\/a>, high standard of living<\/a>, and market size, Madrid is considered the major financial centre<\/a> of Southern Europe<\/a>[14]<\/a><\/sup>[15]<\/a><\/sup> and the Iberian Peninsula<\/a>; it hosts the head offices of the vast majority of major Spanish companies, such as Telef\u00f3nica<\/a>, IAG<\/a> or Repsol<\/a>. Madrid is the 17th most liveable city in the world<\/a> according to Monocle magazine, in its 2014 index.[16]<\/a><\/sup>[17]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n

Madrid houses the headquarters of the World Tourism Organization<\/a> (UNWTO), belonging to the United Nations Organization<\/a> (UN), the Ibero-American General Secretariat<\/a> (SEGIB), the Organization of Ibero-American States<\/a> (OEI), and the Public Interest Oversight Board<\/a> (PIOB). It also hosts major international regulators and promoters of the Spanish language: the Standing Committee of the Association of Spanish Language Academies, headquarters of the Royal Spanish Academy<\/a> (RAE), the Cervantes Institute<\/a> and the Foundation of Urgent Spanish<\/a> (Fund\u00e9u BBVA). Madrid organises fairs such as FITUR,[18]<\/a><\/sup> ARCO,[19]<\/a><\/sup> SIMO TCI<\/a>[20]<\/a><\/sup> and the Cibeles Madrid Fashion Week<\/a>.[21]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n

While Madrid possesses modern infrastructure, it has preserved the look and feel of many of its historic neighbourhoods and streets. Its landmarks include the Royal Palace of Madrid<\/a>; the Royal Theatre<\/a> with its restored 1850 Opera House; the Buen Retiro Park<\/a>, founded in 1631; the 19th-century National Library<\/a> building (founded in 1712) containing some of Spain’s historical archives; a large number of national museums,[22]<\/a><\/sup> and the Golden Triangle of Art<\/a>, located along the Paseo del Prado<\/a> and comprising three art museums: Prado Museum<\/a>, the Reina Sof\u00eda Museum<\/a>, a museum of modern art<\/a>, and the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum<\/a>, which completes the shortcomings of the other two museums.[23]<\/a><\/sup> Cibeles Palace and Fountain<\/a> have become one of the monument symbols of the city.[24]<\/a><\/sup>[25]<\/a><\/sup> Madrid is the most visited city of Spain.[26]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n
