It is situated on the plain of the river <a title=\"Guadalquivir\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Guadalquivir\">Guadalquivir<\/a>. The inhabitants of the city are known as <i>sevillanos<\/i> (feminine form: <i>sevillanas<\/i>) or <i>hispalenses<\/i>, after the <a title=\"Roman Empire\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Roman_Empire\">Roman<\/a> name of the city, <i>Hispalis<\/i>. Seville has a municipal population of about 703,000 as of 2011, and a <a title=\"List of metropolitan areas in Spain\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/List_of_metropolitan_areas_in_Spain\">metropolitan<\/a> population of about 1.5 million, making it the <a title=\"List of municipalities of Spain\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/List_of_municipalities_of_Spain\">fourth-largest city in Spain<\/a> and the <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Largest cities of the European Union by population within city limits\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Largest_cities_of_the_European_Union_by_population_within_city_limits\">30th most populous municipality<\/a> in the <a title=\"European Union\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/European_Union\">European Union<\/a>. Its <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Old Town\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Old_Town\">Old Town<\/a>, with an area of 4 square kilometres (2\u00a0sq\u00a0mi), contains three <a title=\"UNESCO\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/UNESCO\">UNESCO<\/a> <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"World Heritage Sites\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/World_Heritage_Sites\">World Heritage Sites<\/a>: the <a title=\"Alc\u00e1zar of Seville\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Alc%C3%A1zar_of_Seville\">Alc\u00e1zar palace complex<\/a>, the <a title=\"Seville Cathedral\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Seville_Cathedral\">Cathedral<\/a> and the <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Archivo General de Indias\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Archivo_General_de_Indias\">General Archive of the Indies<\/a>. The Seville harbour, located about 80 kilometres (50 miles) from the <a title=\"Atlantic Ocean\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Atlantic_Ocean\">Atlantic Ocean<\/a>, is the only river port in Spain. Seville is also the hottest major metropolitan area in the geographical <a title=\"Western Europe\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Western_Europe\">Western Europe<\/a>, with summer average high temperatures of above 35\u00a0\u00b0C (95\u00a0\u00b0F).<\/p>\n<p>Seville was founded as the Roman city of <i>Hispalis<\/i>. It later became known as <i>Ishbiliya<\/i> (<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Arabic language\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Arabic_language\">Arabic<\/a>: <span dir=\"rtl\" lang=\"ar\">\u0625\u0634\u0628\u064a\u0644\u064a\u0629<\/span>\u200e\u200e)<sup id=\"cite_ref-JayyusiMar.C3.ADn1992_2-0\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Seville#cite_note-JayyusiMar.C3.ADn1992-2\">[2]<\/a><\/sup> after the Muslim conquest in 712. During the Muslim rule in Spain, Seville came under the jurisdiction of the <a title=\"Caliphate of C\u00f3rdoba\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Caliphate_of_C%C3%B3rdoba\">Caliphate of C\u00f3rdoba<\/a> before becoming the independent <a title=\"Taifa of Seville\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Taifa_of_Seville\">Taifa of Seville<\/a>; later it was ruled by the Muslim <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Almoravids\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Almoravids\">Almoravids<\/a> and the <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Almohad dynasty\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Almohad_dynasty\">Almohads<\/a> until finally being incorporated into the Christian <a title=\"Kingdom of Castile\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Kingdom_of_Castile\">Kingdom of Castile<\/a> under <a title=\"Ferdinand III of Castile\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ferdinand_III_of_Castile\">Ferdinand III<\/a> in 1248.<sup id=\"cite_ref-Christian-Muslim_Relations._A_Bibliographical_History._Volume_4_.281200.E2.80.931350.29_3-0\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Seville#cite_note-Christian-Muslim_Relations._A_Bibliographical_History._Volume_4_.281200.E2.80.931350.29-3\">[3]<\/a><\/sup> After the discovery of the Americas, Seville became one of the economic centres of the <a title=\"Spanish Empire\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Spanish_Empire\">Spanish Empire<\/a> as its port monopolised the trans-oceanic trade and the <a title=\"Casa de Contrataci\u00f3n\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Casa_de_Contrataci%C3%B3n\">Casa de Contrataci\u00f3n<\/a> (House of Trade) wielded its power, opening a <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Golden Age of Spain\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Golden_Age_of_Spain\">Golden Age<\/a> of arts and literature. In 1519, <a title=\"Ferdinand Magellan\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ferdinand_Magellan\">Ferdinand Magellan<\/a> departed from Seville for the first circumnavigation of the Earth.
