Its urban area extends beyond the administrative city limits with a population of around 1.5\u20131.6\u00a0million people.<sup id=\"cite_ref-urban_1-1\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Valencia#cite_note-urban-1\">[1]<\/a><\/sup> Valencia is Spain&#8217;s <a title=\"List of metropolitan areas in Spain\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/List_of_metropolitan_areas_in_Spain\">third largest metropolitan area<\/a>, with a population ranging from 1.7 to 2.5\u00a0million depending on how the metropolitan area is defined. The <a title=\"Port of Valencia\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Port_of_Valencia\">Port of Valencia<\/a> is the <a title=\"List of busiest ports in Europe\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/List_of_busiest_ports_in_Europe\">5th busiest container port in Europe<\/a> and the busiest container port on the <a title=\"Mediterranean Sea\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mediterranean_Sea\">Mediterranean Sea<\/a>. The city is ranked at Gamma+ in the <a title=\"Globalization and World Cities Research Network\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Globalization_and_World_Cities_Research_Network\">Globalization and World Cities Research Network<\/a>.<sup id=\"cite_ref-GAWC_3-0\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Valencia#cite_note-GAWC-3\">[3]<\/a><\/sup> Valencia is integrated into an industrial area on the <i><a title=\"Costa del Azahar\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Costa_del_Azahar\">Costa del Azahar<\/a><\/i> (Orange Blossom Coast).<\/p>\n<p>Valencia was founded as a <a title=\"Roman Republic\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Roman_Republic\">Roman<\/a> colony by the consul <a title=\"Decimus Junius Brutus Callaicus\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Decimus_Junius_Brutus_Callaicus\">Decimus Junius Brutus Callaicus<\/a> in 138 BC, and called <i>Valentia Edetanorum<\/i>. In 714 Moroccan and Arab <a title=\"Moors\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Moors\">Moors<\/a> occupied the city, introducing their language, religion and customs; they implemented improved irrigation systems and the cultivation of new crops as well, being capital of the <a title=\"Taifa of Valencia\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Taifa_of_Valencia\">Taifa of Valencia<\/a>. In 1238 the Christian king <a title=\"James I of Aragon\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/James_I_of_Aragon\">James I of Aragon<\/a> reconquered the city and divided the land among the nobles who helped him conquer it, as witnessed in the <i><a title=\"Llibre del Repartiment (Valencia)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Llibre_del_Repartiment_(Valencia)\">Llibre del Repartiment<\/a><\/i>. He also created a new law for the city, the <a title=\"Furs of Valencia\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Furs_of_Valencia\">Furs of Valencia<\/a>, which were extended to the rest of the <a title=\"Kingdom of Valencia\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Kingdom_of_Valencia\">Kingdom of Valencia<\/a>. In the 18th century <a title=\"Philip V of Spain\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Philip_V_of_Spain\">Philip V of Spain<\/a> abolished the privileges as punishment to the kingdom of Valencia for aligning with the <a title=\"Habsburg Spain\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Habsburg_Spain\">Habsburg side<\/a> in the <a title=\"War of the Spanish Succession\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/War_of_the_Spanish_Succession\">War of the Spanish Succession<\/a>. Valencia was the capital of <a title=\"Spain\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Spain\">Spain<\/a> when <a title=\"Joseph Bonaparte\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Joseph_Bonaparte\">Joseph Bonaparte<\/a> moved the Court there in the summer of 1812. It also served as capital between 1936 and 1937, during the <a title=\"Second Spanish Republic\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Second_Spanish_Republic\">Second Spanish Republic<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The city is situated on the banks of the <a title=\"Turia (river)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Turia_(river)\">Turia<\/a>, on the east coast of the <a title=\"Iberian Peninsula\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Iberian_Peninsula\">Iberian Peninsula<\/a>, fronting the <a title=\"Gulf of Valencia\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Gulf_of_Valencia\">Gulf of Valencia<\/a> on the Mediterranean Sea.
